Hot Wax Performance, Drip Bottle Convenience
The SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube closes the gap between the two dominant approaches to drivetrain lubrication. Hot wax immersion has long been the gold standard for efficiency and cleanliness, but the preparation time and process keep most riders on drip lubes. The Super Secret 2.0 changes that equation: developed in partnership with Team Visma Lease a Bike over several years of WorldTour validation, it delivers near-identical performance to a full hot-wax treatment, applied in minutes directly from the bottle.
The original Super Secret defined the benchmark for drip-wax efficiency. The 2.0 formula pushes further on three fronts simultaneously. Longevity increases to 350–400km per application, roughly 20% more than the previous version and on par with SILCA’s own Secret Chain Blend hot wax. Wet-weather performance doubles, achieved through smaller wax particles and new fullerene friction modifiers that maintain the protective wax film where the original formula degraded faster. Drivetrain efficiency gains 0.6 to 0.8 watts over Super Secret 1.0, closing the remaining gap to hot-wax systems.
The formula
The base is the same emulsified wax carrier and Tungsten Disulfide (WS2) that made Super Secret 1.0 effective, now augmented with a new blend of friction-reducing additives including fullerenes. The combination minimises mechanical friction at the chain roller interface, where drivetrain losses are highest, while the wax matrix repels dirt and debris rather than absorbing it. The chain stays clean to the touch between applications, without the black residue that conventional oil-based lubes deposit on frame tubes and shorts.
Preparation determines performance. A previously waxed chain needs only a wipe-down before application. A chain coming off an oil-based lube requires a full strip and dry. Shake the bottle well, cross-chain slightly to improve roller penetration, and apply one drop to each roller while slowly backpedalling. Distribute evenly by backpedalling several revolutions, then leave the chain to cure for at least four hours. Overnight is the recommended standard. Re-apply when the chain becomes audibly noisy, which on a clean, dry road typically means around 350–400km.
Super Secret 2.0 suits any rider who wants hot-wax drivetrain efficiency without committing to the full wax immersion process. It works on road, gravel and MTB chains alike, and its wet-weather improvements make it a credible option beyond the dry summer months where drip waxes typically underperform. For riders already using the original Super Secret, the upgrade is straightforward and the performance difference is measurable.
